Home is where the heart is. “Níl aon tinteán mar do thinteán féin” There is no place like home.
But where does one consider home? Particularly when you live and work in a different part of the country to your family, friends, and hometown. Can one consider themselves a native nomad in Ireland?
My name is Ashling, I am 23 years old, and I am originally from a small village in West Co. Cavan in the Northwest of Ireland. I moved to Dublin at eighteen years of age to begin University in the City. Since then, I have completed my undergraduate degree, worked in Dublin, and continue to live and study in the city 5 years later as I pursue my master’s degree at Dublin City University.
However, I like many of my culchie (people from the countryside) peers make the pilgrimage back to our home counties at the weekend. Although I have journeyed back to Cavan way less in recent years, I would still consider it home.
Having recently started a master’s programme with a mostly international cohort, I was asked many travel questions about my home country. Many asked me for recommendations, and I soon realised that I haven’t adequately explored my homeland. Thus, came about the idea for the eye on éire blog series.
The mission behind this blog is to showcase some of the fantastic travel locations Ireland has to offer. From my home county of Cavan, as well as the northwest of Ireland to my current home of Dublin. The blog aims to showcase both the lesser-known as well as a few better-known locations within the emerald isle.
The blog will feature travel tips, stories, history and many fun facts. Be sure to keep an eye out on the Instagram page too for some crisp photographs as I re-discover my love for photography. So be sure to follow this native nomad in Ireland!
